Alessandra Mirka Gatti, más conocida como Domino (o Dynamika, Juliet, Eskimo, Paula Roberts, Sheela) es simplemente una de las artistas más importantes en la historia de Eurobeat. Aparte de su increíble voz y sus canciones adictivas, es la co-fundadora de AbeatC Records, con su ex esposo Dave Rodgers, con el que incluso tuvo un hijo, de nombre Federico (el que ya tiene sus propias canciones, cantando bajo el alias de Freddy Rodgers y Kaioh). Después de su divorcio, ella y Sandro Oliva se desvinculan de AbeatC y empiezan en el 2006 su propia compañía, llamada GoGo’s Music, en alusión a las GoGo Girls, grupo que comparte ella con su eterna amiga Lolita. Además, esta mujer tiene algunas de las canciones más conocidas dentro del catalogo de Eurobeat, como Mickey Mouse March, Gotcha! y Popteen (y si, ella de hecho HABLA japonés). Así que no demos más vueltas a esto y aquí esta la entrevista a una de las voces más importantes del la historia del Eurobeat: Domino.

¿Por qué elegiste el nombre de Domino como tu nombre artístico?

Elegí el nombre “Domino” en un acuerdo con Dave Rodgers; en ese momento estábamos escuchando la canción “Domino Dancing” de los Pet Shop Boys y por ello tuvimos la idea de ocupar el nombre de Domino.

¿Cómo conociste el Eurobeat? ¿Por qué no elegiste otro estilo de música, como el Pop o las Baladas?

La música Dance de los 80’s fue el soundtrack de mi juventud; cuando conocí a Dave Rodgers descubrí el Eurobeat como una extensión de esa música dance de los 80’s. Desde que era pequeña, la música ha sido mi gran amor (¡Pero obviamente no tan grande como el amor que siento por mi hijo!) y volverme una cantante siempre había sido mi sueño. Adoro el Eurobeat porque es mi vida, pero también me hubiese gustado confirmar mi talento en otros estilos de música: más melódicos o pop (Como Laura Pausini o Whitney Houston). Debido a todo el trabajo que tengo para el mercado japonés, no tengo mucho tiempo para dedicarme a otras cosas, así que abandoné completamente la idea de cantar otro tipo de música.

¿Qué influencias tienes en tu estilo? ¿Algún artista que te gustaría mencionar?

En mi carrera, diferentes artistas me han dado la inspiración y me han ayudado a encontrar mi propio estilo: por ejemplo, Clara Moroni ha sido, y aun es, la más importante artista de Eurobeat. También la música dance de los 70’s, la música tradicional japonesa y artistas contemporáneos como Namie Amuro, TRF y Every Little Thing me han dado muchas inspiraciones. Además, lo principal en mi es la “emoción latina” que llevo dentro mío. Me gustaría cantar canciones de los 70’s como las de Whitney Houston.

¿Cómo definirías tu propia música?

¡¡Es mi deseo de compartir mi felicidad con el mundo!!

¿Por qué cantas en inglés si no es tu idioma natural?

Canto en ingles porque es la manera más fácil de comunicarme con todo el mundo.

Háblanos acerca de la composición musical (¿Escribes tú las canciones? ¿Cómo trabajas con ellas? ¿Cuánto tiempo te demoras en componer una nueva canción?)

Siempre escribo mis canciones con mi gran colaborador Sandro Oliva; trabajamos juntos en el estudio de grabación y empezamos componiendo a partir de una idea, como un titulo o un tema específico, entonces componemos la melodía y después las letras. Si son en inglés, las escribimos primero y después Francesca Contini las revisa. Si son en japonés, le damos la idea a Akiko Kozato y ella la traduce a japonés. Cada canción tiene su propia historia; a veces tomamos 15 días en componer una canción y otras, quizás, ¡hasta dos meses!

¿Qué tan diferente es cuando tú grabas sola a cuando lo haces con las GoGo Girls?

La diferencia es sencilla: Cuando canto sola es divertido, pero cuando estamos las dos, tenemos aún más diversión, ¡porque Elena es genial!

Aparte de Japón, el Eurobeat es popular en Sudamérica, especialmente en Brasil y Chile. ¿Cómo te sientes con eso?

¡¡Si no fuera por Phil Austin (Webmaster de dominonline.net) yo nunca hubiese sabido acerca de la existencia de tantos grupos de amantes de Eurobeat afuera de Japón!! Estoy muy contenta con ello y espero que sigan creciendo más y más.

¿Cómo se vive el Eurobeat en Italia? Conocemos acerca de Japón, USA, Brasil y acá en Chile. ¿Cómo te sientes con eso?

Incluso en Italia la gente esta empezando a hablar del Eurobeat en estos años, especialmente entre Cosplayers y Gamers. Yo no creo que en Italia este tipo de música vaya a tener el mismo impacto que en Japón, porque es un tipo especifico de música para una audiencia en particular.

Háblanos de gogosmusic.it (Creación del sitio, necesidades y proyectos).

El sitio web www.gogosmusic.it fue creado con las mismas emociones con las que creamos nuestras canciones: felicidad y colorido. Empezamos este proyecto hace más de un año atrás y ha sido muy complicado el explicarle a los webmasters y diseñadores del sitio como queríamos que se desarrollara el proyecto, ¡pero al final lo logramos!

Queremos introducir una sección dedicada al catalogo (Nombres de las canciones, artistas, autores y compositores) otra dedicada al merchandising (t-shirts, hats, pins) y otra dedicada a un juego con mis fans, pero eso es secreto ;)
Estoy curiosa de saber, de parte de ustedes, si tienen ideas para hacer el sitio mejor.

Finalmente, ¿tienes algunas palabras para tus fans chilenos?

¡¡Estoy demasiado contenta de tener tantos fans en Chile y espero que en el futuro pueda actuar frente a ustedes y conocerlos muy pronto!! ¡Por favor, no me abandones. Necesito de todo su apoyo latino! ¡¡Los amo muchisimo!!

Apart from her incredible voice and catchy tunes, she’s co-founder of AbeatC Records, with her former husband Dave Rodgers, and also they even had a children, named Federico (who has already record his own songs, under the alias of Freddy Rogers & Kaioh). After the divorce, she and Sandro Oliva left AbeatC and started in 2006 their own record label, called GoGo’s Music, named after the GoGo Girls, formed by her and her lifetime friend Lolita. Also, this woman has also some of the best known songs on the Eurobeat collection, like Mickey Mouse March, Gotcha! and Popteen (and yes, she DOES speak Japanese). So, let’s get to this interview with one of the most important voices of the Eurobeat history: Domino.

Why did you choose Domino as your artist name?
I’ve chosen the name “Domino” in an agreeing with Dave Rodgers; at that time we were listening to the song “Domino Dancing” by Pet Shop Boys and so we had the idea of using Domino.

How did you get to meet Eurobeat? Why didn’t you try another music genre, like Pop or Slow Ballads?
Dance music in the 80’s has been the soundtrack of my youth; when I knew Dave Rodgers I discovered Eurobeat music, which was the “extension” of the 80’s dance music. Since I was a child, music has been my big love (But obviously my biggest love is my son!) and becoming a singer has always been my dream! I love Eurobeat music because it is my life, but I would have liked also to confirm my talent in other kinds of music: more melodic or more pop (as Laura Pausini or Whitney Houston). Because of all the work I have for the Japanese market, I don’t have so much time to dedicate into other things, so I abandoned completely the idea of singing other kind of music.

Do you have influences in your style? Any favorite artist you would like to recall?
During my career, different artists have given me the inspiration and have helped me to find my own style: for example Clara Moroni has been, and still is, the number one Eurobeat artist. Also 70’s dance music, traditional Japanese music and Japanese artists like Namie Amuro, TRF and Every Little Thing have given me good inspirations. Besides this, the main thing is the "Latin Emotion" I’ve got inside. I would like to sing some 70’s songs like Whitney Houston’s.

How do you define your own music?
The wish to share my happiness with the world!

Why do you sing in English if it’s not your natural language?
I sing in English because it is the easiest way to comunicate with everybody!!

Tell us about the music composition (Do you write your songs? How do you work? How much time do you take on making a new song?).
I always write my songs with my best collaborator Sandro Oliva; we work together in our recording studio and we start composing from a strong idea like a title or a subject; then we compose the melody and later the lyrics. If they are in English, we write them first and then, Francesca Contini do a final check. If they are in Japanese, we give the idea to Akiko Kozato, and she translates them into japanese. Every song has its own story; sometimes we take 15 days to compose a song, and some other times it takes, maybe, 2 months!

How different is when you record alone than when you record as GoGo Girls?
The difference is simple: When I sing alone I have fun, but when we are 2, we have more fun because Elena is great!

Apart from Japan, Eurobeat is quite popular in South America, specially Brazil and Chile. How do you feel about this?
If it wasn’t for Phil Austin (Webmaster of www.dominonline.net), I would have never known the existance of so many eurobeat groups out of Japan!! I’m very happy about this and I hope they will grow more and more.

How do Eurobeat lives in Italy? We only know about Japan, Brazil, and here in Chile. How do you feel about that?
Even in Italy people have been talking about Eurobeat in these years, especially between Cosplayers and Gamers. I don’t think that in Italy this kind of music would have the same impact than in Japan, because it is a specific music for a very particular audience.

Tell us about gogosmusic.it (Site creation, needs and projects).
The web site www.gogosmusic.it has been created along with the emotions that we create our songs: happiness and colour! We started this project one year ago, and it has been very complicated to explain to people involved in the construction of the site how to develop the project, but in the end we got it done!
We would like to introduce a section dedicated to the catalog (Song title, artist, author, composer...); one section dedicated to merchandising (t-shirts, hats, pins...); and another section for a game with my fans, but this idea is still top secret!
I’m curious to know, from all of you, if you have some ideas to make the website better!!!

Finally, do you have a few words for your Chilean fans?
I’m so happy to know that I have many fans in Chile and I hope in the future to perform there and meet you very soon! Please, don’t leave me alone, I need all your beautiful latin support! I love you all so much!
